Maybe the extent of your foreign language proficiency is to the sing-song tune of “Donde esta?” or driving through El Pollo Loco. Or, perhaps it doesn’t get you much further than a scripted exchange you learned in tenth grade leading with a polite greeting of “Bonjour!” followed by a reply that always says you’re doing well. It would be nice to speak another language, especially when you’re in another country and desperately need to use the loo. And no, reading a book in French won’t make your child fluent by the age of three. But nonetheless, it’s fun to pretend even if your accent is not so good.
