Roomba for you, Scooba for me

November 12th, 2009

Just when you think you got the job done, you proudly glance around the room and then, you spot it – the dust bunny. Sneaky lil fuzzer. So you walk over thinking you can show him who’s boss. You humbly pick him up and then, just when you think you got em, another one appears, lurking and taunting you. Nasty lil creatures.

This is a very frustrating thing for a Nestlette who tries so hard to keep her floors so spotless you could eat off them (if you are counting on a Nestlette to cook for you, you better hope so too). The Swiffer was supposed to help us. It gets a lot of attention and it becomes a new home staple and yes, sometimes, it does come in handy. But what I have noticed is that after using it, I end up on my hands and knees picking up the dust and dirt that the Swiffer merely moved across the room. Whether I Swiffer Wet or Swiffer Dry, I am disappointed with the results. And on the Flintstone-inspired concrete floors in our apartment, it has become more obvious – I need a better solution.

My solution: A robotic vacuum/mop. While the Swiffer system seems to get all the attention, the innovations of iRobot could be one of the most underrated inventions in my opinion.

Vacuum Cleaning Robot

iRobot Scooba 330

Floor Washing Robot

Do you ever wonder how it is humanly possible for a Nestlette to do all that she does? Well, we don’t do it alone. Short of having a full staff of  professional help, we welcome on our techie companions.

Some Nestlettes need a vacuum cleaning robot – the Roomba. Others need a floor washing robot – the Scooba. Either way, you can not deny the perks:

  • Keeps your feet on the floor (where they should be – not your hands and knees)
  • Not a back breaker (even “lightweight” vacuums require a certain amount of lugging)
  • Less frustrating (turn it on, let it go and forget about it)

Available in different models depending on the size of your room. Choose the one that’s right for you.

That being said, dust bunnies and all, there is still nothing like cleaning the floors the old-fashioned way and this task should be a part of the routine -  just not daily (because then it becomes a chore). Let a little round roaming robot help you multitask while you tackle other chore-esque things throughout the day!

P.S. iRobot contributes to STEM education. If you are not familiar, it is the future of our childrens’ careers – ones in science, technology, engineering and math. A vacuum that also functions as a teachable moment (Yes, I know it’s a stretch.)

Kitchenaid classic stand mixer

Nestlette Recommends:

The Kitchenaid Classic Stand Mixer

It takes several important ingredients to be called a classic. Start with the celebrated tilt-head design that gives you easy access to both the beater and bowl. Then add a Flour Power Rating of 8 cups, which means you can make enough dough for 6 dozen cookies, 3 loaves of bread or 6 pounds of [...]
